'High-tech' bike shop coming to Alcoa
If you read my column this morning, then you know that Douglas
and Trysh Benton (two very energetic and lively individuals) are
opening a new bike shop in Alcoa at the first of March.
The pair are optimistic that folks will want to buy or rent one of
their unique bikes (chainless and battery assisted) while taking
advantage of the 11-mile greenway right in front of their store at
215 Aluminum Ave., Alcoa.

Over the last couple of years, Douglas Benton made a
point to carry a rubber glove in a pouch on his Trek
bicycle because the chain often would come off. Those
days are over for the Alcoa resident, who recently
bought a chainless bicycle that sells for about $500.
Calling the bike "amazing" and hoping to get people
"moving," Benton plans to begin selling it and other
"high-tech" bikes when he and his wife, Trysh, open in
a few weeks Wheels 4 Tomorrow at 215 Aluminum
Ave., along a stretch of greenway that runs 11 miles in
Blount County.
What we will offer is an opportunity to get outside with
these cool bikes on an underutilized greenway," said
Benton, a 1980 University of Tennessee graduate who
grew up in Northeast Knoxville.
In their newly acquired 1,000-square-foot building, the
Bentons will sell the chainless bikes (for adults and
kids), which allows riders to change gears while
standing still, as well as a battery-assisted bicycle that
allows people to "get a little exercise without killing
themselves."
"It's pretty amazing," he said. And after a short test
ride, I must agree.
The pair also will offer bike rentals (including Segway
rentals in the near future), accessories and storage
services. They plan to sell water, energy bars and
healthy snacks, as well as offering free coffee.
